Assignments

Vedantu • 2020 • Platform Design

Background

Assignments are sets of practice questions covering multiple topics within a chapter or subject. The adoption rate for assignments was below 10% due to a number of issues.

The interface resembled a PDF, making it unclear that assignments were interactive. Student couldn’t see solutions, decimal numbers couldn’t be entered for numeric answers. There was no way to track progress of attempted assignments.

Objective

We decided to create an interactive platform that supports various question types: multiple-choice, subjective, numeric, and diagrammatic.

Enable progress tracking and show students how they compare with peers

Allow students to view solutions and revise concepts

Increase the assignment attempt rate by at least 10%

An All-New Assignments Platform

1

On the landing page, students see key details like the total number of questions, estimated completion time, total no. of topics covered

2

Showing covered topics helps students prepare before attempting the assignment.

3

We provided clear instructions above answer options to avoid confusion. E.g. Choose only one answer, Enter only numeric values

4

A ‘Report Error’ option allows students to flag questions with issues

5

Students can skip difficult questions, allowing them to manage their time more efficiently

Solution Review

1

Students can now check answers and view solutions for each question

2

Solutions include key concepts to help students with quick revision

3

Since assignments aren’t graded, we added peer comparison cues like ‘% of students who got this right’, for motivation

1

The question panel shows the status of each question -- attempted, correct, incorrect, skipped -- keeping the system status visible.

2

Before exiting, students see a performance summary, along with a message that their progress is saved. This helps encourage students to complete assignments later.
